Personal life
Name of Artist: Joan Miró Ferra
Birth Date: April 20, 1893
Birth Place: Barcelona, Spain
What later life events (marriage, children, deaths, etc.) had a major influence on the artist?
Around the age of 18 Miro suffered a major life event that completely changed the trajectory of his future. It started at the age of 14 when he left for business school at the School of Commerce in Barcelona where he studied from 1907-1910. There in Barcelona he also attended La Lonja’s Escuela Superior de Artes Industriales y Bella Artes where he completed three years of art studies in addition to business school. After school he took a position as a clerk until he suffered a nervous breakdown and resumed art studies from 1912-1915 at Francesc Gali’s Escola d’Art in Barcelona.
Other impactful events that occurred early in Miro’s life were his first solo exhibit at the Dalmau Galleries in Barcelona in 1918 and potentially the meeting of Pablo Picasso in Paris in 1920.
Most importantly though was Miro’s new connection with Paris. After 1920 Miro began spending a significant amount of time there where he began associating with other artists and participating in Dada activities and associating with the Surrealist group.
Time Period
Describe what prevailing style of art was popular when the artist first started?
When Miro first started he was influenced by folk art and church frescoes of Spain as well as Dutch realism. His paintings consisted of mostly landscapes, still life, and genre scenes. His early style has been referred to as “poetic realism” and was drastically different from the new emerging styles he soon aligned himself with.
What ‘new’ style did the artist start, or get involved in?
In the early 1920’s Miro began to associate with Dada and Surrealist artists like Jean Arp and Yves Tanguy. Miro wanted, and succeeded, to create a style somewhere between Cubism, Abstraction, Dada, and Surrealism where subject matter was not completely abstract but still familiar yet fantastical.
What important historical events happened during the artist’s lifetime that influenced one or more pieces?
The most important events to influence Miro’s work were his moving to Paris and connecting with the Surrealist circle. Miro collaborated with several Surrealist artists but never officially became part of the group. Many of the works and shows he did are significantly influenced by Expressionism, Fauvism, Surrealism, Dada, and Cubism. You can see examples of these influences in the works “Woman Doing Her Hair before a Mirror.” In “Woman Doing Her Hair before a Mirror” specifically you can see a significant Abstract and Expressionism elements with Surrealism influences. There is not as much depth and dimension as most Surrealist works but there is a hint of a real form amidst the abstract characteristics of the woman.

Name of the piece:
Nocturne by Joan Miro
What is it about?
Nocturne is part of a series of 23 works titled Constellations which were created between January 1940 and September 1941. There is no direct description from the artists however based on the information he has given and the titles of the work and series, Nocturne appears to be a fantasy world in the stars with living beings thriving among them.
Why did you choose this piece?
I chose this piece because I was initially drawn to it when I was choosing which artists to request for my artist project. The reason I was drawn to this piece was because it reminded me of the thumbprint drawings I liked to make as a child with blocks of color connected and turned into subjects with lines.
Name two elements of design that the artist used in this piece:
Line
Shape
Name one principle of design that the artist used in this piece:
Contrast
When you first looked at this piece what was your reaction to it?
My first reaction to this piece was to smile, probably because of the little figure off to the right that looks happy. The whole piece for me is happy, although the dark wash over the background made me feel like it had more grit and substance beneath the happy first impression.
Did your reaction change as you studied this piece? Explain.
As I studied the piece my reaction didn’t change much but I began to notice other figures and faces in the piece and the emotions of those subjects which seem more varied than just happy.
